The Three Kings’ Procession in Darsūniškis

Papročiai, apeigos, šventiniai renginiai

The Three Kings Day (Epiphany) celebration observed by the entire community of Darsūniškis is a vivid expression of living tradition that distinguishes this Kaišiadorys‑region village. The Three Kings’ Procession, known here since the early 20th century, carries both religious and cultural significance.

Each year, on the Sunday closest to 6 January, a group of local residents transforms into the festive retinue of the Three Kings. Three men take on the roles of Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar; two young men accompany them as royal guards; and a girl walking at the front represents the Star of Bethlehem, carrying light and the message of the newborn Savior. With the support of the community and the Kruonis Culture Centre, the retinue is dressed in ceremonial costumes, equipped with staffs, spears, and a star, and prepared with expressive character makeup.

Once ready, the retinue proceeds to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Darsūniškis. At the end of Holy Mass, as the church choir sings “Sveikas Jėzau gimusis” (“Hail, newborn Jesus”), the procession solemnly enters through the wide‑opened main doors, approaches the Nativity scene, and greets the infant Jesus and the parishioners. After the service, a special mission begins—the procession through Darsūniškis and nearby villages. Visiting local homes, the participants sing the Three Kings’ hymn, mark doors with the blessed chalk inscription +K+M+B, and offer wishes of happiness, health, and God’s blessing. Particular attention is given to elderly people living alone and families with small children. Residents welcome the retinue with respect and sincerity—the visit of the Kings is regarded as a sacred and moving event and hosts traditionally express gratitude with treats or small gifts.

Deeply rooted in Darsūniškis, the tradition is passed down from generation to generation. Cherishing the memories of their elders, new members of the procession willingly assume the roles and experience. The Epiphany celebration strengthens the local community, brings the joy of faith, and fosters pride in the cultural heritage of the region.
