The Sartai Horse Racing tradition in Dusetos

Papročiai, apeigos, šventiniai renginiai

The Sartai Horse Races in Dusetos are among the most visited winter events in Lithuania, uniting the historical heritage of Aukštaitija (a region in Northeastern Lithuania) with the excitement of contemporary sport.

The origins of the celebration date back to the late 18th century, when written sources first mention horse-drawn sleigh competitions held by the Counts Plater. Later, wealthier farmers began to participate, gathering with their well‑bred horses during the Candlemas festivities.

It is believed that the original purpose of the Sartai races may be linked to the Aukštaitija region’s Shrovetide (Užgavėnės) rituals, whose customs closely resemble the event: riding in horse‑drawn sleighs, wearing masks, splashing water, feasting, and singing songs characteristic of the celebration.

The annual Sartai festival is a complex event whose most prominent highlight is the prestigious trotting horse races, with horses harnessed to special two‑wheeled sulkies. Since 1996, the races have taken place at the purpose‑built Dusetos Hippodrome. Visitors are also drawn to the colourful fair, where artisans and traders from across the Baltic region present traditional crafts and culinary heritage. An important part of the festival is the cultural programme, featuring a theatrical procession and performances by the finest Aukštaitija folk bands, folklore ensembles, and professional musicians. Exhibitions at the Dusetos Art Gallery highlight the enduring significance of the horse in Lithuanian culture.

Life in Dusetos moves to the rhythm of “from Sartai to Sartai”—the celebration is the most important annual event for the community. Many local residents—cultural workers, farmers, teachers—have inherited their love for horses and equestrian culture from their families and actively contribute to organizing the festival. Thanks to the sincere cooperation of the Dusetos Eldership and Parish Community Association and local cultural institutions, Sartai continues to grow each year, bringing together not only the local community but also thousands of visitors from Lithuania and abroad.
