The Roma Culture Festival “Gypsy Fest”

Kita

For centuries, the Roma community in Lithuania has nurtured an archaic musical style, distinctive dance aesthetics, and rich oral and culinary traditions. To counteract cultural isolation—which poses a threat to the survival of Roma heritage—and to enhance the prestige of Roma culture and community rights, an impulse emerged to systematically safeguard and promote these traditions. Since 2016, the “Gypsy Fest” festival has successfully revitalized Roma heritage and ensured its continuity.

“Gypsy Fest” is an international event distinguished by a diverse and vibrant program, including performances in public urban spaces, concerts, creative workshops, presentations of culinary heritage and traditional textiles, and the youth talent competition “Romavision”. A particularly distinctive feature is the “Roma Village”—a specially designed space where visitors can experience Roma oral traditions, customs, and crafts firsthand, feel the spirit of nomadic life, and taste Roma delicacies prepared on-site in traditional cookware. The festival is also renowned for its colorful parades accompanied by live music, led by flower-adorned Roma carriages drawn by decorated horses.

The festival’s activities are intended for both Roma communities in Lithuania and abroad, as well as the wider public. Organized by the Roma community itself, the event aims not only to present Roma culture but also to transmit it to future generations. One of its most significant achievements is the successful engagement of young Roma, who develop their vocal, dance, and instrumental skills through festival activities.

“Gypsy Fest” has become an important platform for Roma artistic expression, reviving the community’s self-esteem and pride in its culture. Open events encourage dialogue between the Roma and broader society, help reduce social exclusion, and attract media attention. The active involvement of the Roma people in the festival’s organization strengthens community cohesion and the living bond between generations.
